Fieldtrips, Workshops & Volunteer Opportunities

Families are encouraged to share their knowledge with the cooperative.  This can be accomplished by teaching a workshop about an area of interest, planning a fieldtrip or organizing a volunteer opportunity for the group. We also encourage members of the broader community to give a workshop. Please contact us at info@kickhome.org for more information.

Participation in Fieldtrips, Workshops and Volunteer Opportunities is open to all. If a family is not a KHC member we invite you to join us for any fieldtrip or workshop, however there might be an additional non member fee per participant. We encourage you to join our cooperative and pay the annual $25 membership fee which would allow you to take advantage of our member rates as well as support our homeschool enrichment programs.

Popp's cave is on private land near Bosstown, WI. The cave is open to the public as long as particular access issues are carefully followed. Bill Humphrey is a professional guide who is familiar with cave access and the land use issues involved. We will begin with a few group warm ups, team building and a discussion on cave environments and safety protocol. There is a short but strenuous hike to reach the cave entrance which usually takes about 30 min each way. We will be in the cave for approximately 1.5 hours. Plan to spend approximately four hours total on this activity. There are many chambers and passageways to explore and many rock formations to observe inside the cave. We may encounter live bats, tight passageways, shallow pools of water and plenty of mud. What to bring: Old clothes that can get wet and muddy Optional Old shoes or rain boots. Optional Cotton work gloves Flashlight Optional change of clothes in a plastic bag. The cave is a constant temperature of 58F so an old fleece jacket or sweater is perfect. We will be outside so dress for the weather. This event takes place rain or shine. Bill will provide helmets, extra flashlights and a professionally guided experience. Group chaperones/teachers are free. Popp’s is 21 miles east of Viroqua near Bosstown, WI. DIRECTIONS: From Viroqua, take HWY 14 E. towards Richland Center. See 9/18 description.

• October     9     9:00am - 1:00pm    Wild Foods Gathering and Lunch

Experienced naturalist, Nicholas Gale will guide us on a walk to learn about wild foods available in our area. We will identify and gather wild foods, some of which we will then enjoy in a mid-day meal. Dress for the weather and bring a container (bags, basket) to collect foods. We will meet at Kickapoo Nature Reserve Visitor’s center. Cost is $6.00 per child  (pre-registration 9/25)

If parents want to participate and eat the food, they also need to pay the fee. However, the reserve requires the group to bring only one adult per 10 children, so we do not need every child to have a parent present. Carpooling anyone? (Note: for those interested adults, right around that time, Nicholas Gale will be offering a wild foods walk/lunch at the Reserve, geared more towards adults).

• September    25     9:00am - 12:00pm     Fun with Bugs

Have a fun morning out by a trout stream learning about what makes for the best trout habitat.  We will take some easy quality measures by the stream and then collect water bugs with a net to see what kind of food trout like to eat.  All these ingredients make for a fine home for fish in this area. Note:  There are no chairs for the class, so dress appropriately, for sitting on the ground.  Also, feel free to bring a picnic lunch and/or fishing gear for after the class.  Read's Creek Nursery (about 5 miles south of Viroqua on hwy 14).   Note:  There are no chairs for the class, so dress appropriately, for sitting on the ground.  Also, feel free to bring a picnic lunch and/or fishing gear for after the class.

Where: Place to be announced

The environmental art class will focus on expressing environmental consciousness through art.  Projects will include painting, relief sculpture, and collage using recycled objects and natural "found" materials.  $36.00 for 4 classes.
Stacie is offering an environmental art class, in preparation for Earth Day.  Stacie is also the curator for the art exhibit at the Viroqua Food Co-op.  She said she would like to have some art from school children, to feature over the month of April .  So hopefully we'll get some works up from our KHC children!
The classes will be held on the following dates:
Fridays, March 6th, 13th and 27th.  9:15 to 10:15 (time is tentative, depending on if we'll need two groups)
Tuesday, March 17th (no Laughing River that day).  8:30 to 9:30
If there need to be two groups, then we would add a Wednesday, 8:30 to 9:30 slot.
Stacie said the class is appropriate for all ages. If KHC members do not want to do such an early class on a Tues./Wed., then we can stick with three classes on Fridays.  In that case, it would be $30 total for cooperative members. Stacie is in the process of finding a space.  Depending on the location, the above price may increase by $2 per class.
